I really need your help. I’m about to wrap up the second issue of the potluck zine, and I’m not sure if I want to:
- use the print-on-demand service which I used to publish the first issue of the zine, or
- sell the zine as a downloadable PDF, which you could buy for much less (think $3 as opposed to $7) and choose for yourself whether you wanted to print it on your home printer or leave it as a PDF and refer to it on your computer
- or… both?
Please help me decide by leaving a comment here! Thanks!

I’m in favor of the downloadable PDF — I’m always a fan of e-copies of things.
Personally I’m into the tactility of a physical zine and that someone’s hands put it together, but I’m sure a lot of people would also appreciate the downloadable form and its cheap(er)ness.
my vote is for the pdf. i mean, if you’re going digital instead of handmade, i say go 100% digital.
I like having the physical zine. It just feels good having more in my stack!
I’m another vote for the physical actual zine. I have a couple of ebooks, but I never use them like I use my actual cookbooks. AND, I love love love your zine. it’s so beautiful to hold and look at. Maybe offer both options, since it seems some people like one option and the other like the other option?
Physical zine. I loved the first one. Whenever I print out recipes, I lose them or they get yucky and have to print multiple copies anyway.
I’m also a fan of having a print copy in my hot little hand. I don’t like e-books. I’m a messy cook and would trash that poor comuputer.
I’m torn. I really like having a physical copy of something, since I like to “collect” things (it’s so hard for me to pay for mp3s versus buying the actual album!) but I know that some people don’t like owning things any more, so both is awesome, though I’d probably buy the physical copy. MagPie seems pretty awesome, and I’m really impressed with the first ‘zine, so if both are easy-ish to do, then go for it!
PDF! Because my cheap ass might actually buy it
as opposed to the zine.
Bof’ of ‘em! I heart being green, and I use my computer to cook more than cookbooks, but I would rather pick up a copy.
i say do both, options are a good thing! i’d personally buy the physical copy. the company you used for the first one was amazing. super fast and beautifully made!
i vote for both. i love the greenness of the pdf but i personally want the physical copy. it’s just nice to have it right on the counter while you cook!
I like to have a physical zine but if it’s the same as the pdf, I’d be far more likely to buy the pdf and print it myself. I also think if you’re able to have the pdf at that price ($3), people would be more likely to buy it, even if they hadn’t tried your cooking before.
pdf- that way you can print a recipe as you need it. Plus you can make the font larger before you print it out so you don’t need reading glasses in the kitchen!
I’d also vote for both. I prefer to have a “real” copy because I’m too cheap to print in colour and I love having the more professional looking zine – it gives me more inspiration to cook from it.
I vote for both. Personally though..I like having a copy in my hand so I can sit around and read it for fun and it’s also easier for me to cook from it then an e-book.
If you could do both options, that’d be ideal. I’ll probably end up needing the buy it pre-printed because I don’t have a laptop to keep in the kitchen, or a decent printer, but lots of other people would probably prefer the cheaper, more environmentally sound, PDF.
yeah, my vote is both or physical. if i bought the downloadable it would just sit on my computer unused and never printed.
If it isn’t too much trouble, I say do both!
Physical zine. To use the PDF you have to print them anyway or risk damaging your laptop.
Amy – can you please explain what you mean by that? I have never heard that keeping PDFs on your computer risked damage. I have at least 2 dozen PDFs saved on my hard drive right now and haven’t experienced any problems.
I think-please correct me if I’m wrong-Amy means that you have to print the recipes anyway or risk damaging your laptop by having it in the kitchen to read from. Which is risky, risky business for us messy cooks. I totally killed my old laptop by knocking it off the counter while cooking a recipe I had on it. And I’m still bitter even though it was totally my fault.
I’d like to have the actual zine to add to my collection.
physical! Let’s get physical!
I think Amy might be referring to the dangers of bringing a laptop into the kitchen to refer to a pdf recipe while cooking.
My vote is for both. The beauty of zines isn’t just the content itself, but the layout and presentation – having something tactile in your hand. That said, I would prefer a pdf book (especially since the shorter length makes it perfect to print at home.) Easier to keep and refer to on the computer, for me, anyway, and the less expensive format also makes it more accessible.
And… hooray for the new zine! I’m really looking forward to it!
I think you should do both. I loved the layout of the first zine and I’m happy enough to pay the $7 to have something printed out, but a .pdf only option would be good for those who are more frugal.
I generally prefer the pre-printed. If it’s a pdf, I have to print it, bind or staple it, and keep up with it.
PDF, definitely!
[...] I asked you a week ago which format you would prefer: physical or digital, and boy, you guys came out of the woodwork to voice your opinion about it. I’m so glad that you did, because I had been debating it back and forth for weeks. [...]
